It consists of a list of about 100 books, each one of which has a two page write-up: summary, a critic's view, discussion points, background information, and suggested companion books.The list contains books that are classics, though most are not, both old and new, and set around the world, though somewhat oriented to England, where the publisher of this book resides. No more than one book by an author is included, though the companion book section is a backdoor means of including more. The list is somewhat arbitrary. There is no claim that this is a "best of" list. If anything, it has too many, almost predictable, classics by such authors as Conrad, Faulkner, Fitzgerald, Greene, Heller, Hemingway, Huxley, James, D. H. Lawrence, Nabokov, Orwell, J. D. Salinger, Twain, Waugh, and Woolf. There are some rather obscure books: it seems like books set in Africa are over represented.It's hard to rate such a compilation. It may be useful. Undoubtedly, there are many other means of finding reading material, especially with all of the online review and rating sites. But the comments are interesting.
