I was so caught up in the suspense/mystery of that book that I was addicted. Still am. How refreshing to read a story that rides on its own merits, without gratuitous sex scenes to draw a fan-base. And don't get me wrong, I love sophisticated erotica. But this fabulous story, told in dual POV's, was all about the story first. It held me captive.Diana Iverson owns her fledgling law firm in Boston. She's uptight and full of insecurity, especially around men. I liked her character. I liked that she's full of faults. She's not perfect like most heroines in most romantic/suspense novels. Diana is genuine. She was raised under her mothers' critical and harsh thumb, causing Diana to try harder to please her mother...and always failing. Diana has a suspicious nature. She disguises her insecurities with cold haughtiness.Dr. Ethan Tannock is a professor at Princeton. He's a people person...warm and congenial. He notices the oddest, almost hidden idiosyncrasies of the people he meets --- almost right away. He "reads" people which comes naturally to him. This is his profession...this is what he does.Diana and Ethan become enemies within moments of meeting...not because of Ethan, but because Diana is a social misfit with a casual conversation. Yes, she can argue a case...but outside the courtroom she's lost. And because of her suspicious nature, she mistrusts Ethans' friendly motives. Both characters are fragile; Ethan because he's been used and abused by the manipulations of unfaithful women...twice. And Diana simply suffers from low self-esteem and mistrust.I like how Ms. Gleason gets into the story rights away. I like how she captures my attention quickly. I like how she takes two severely opposite personalities...makes them hate each other, and then slowly begins to create tolerance between them (much like the other two books in this series). A mutual respect that begins to grow into attraction. Soon they become friends which causes their attraction to bloom. I loved how Diana talks out loud to herself...she's so full of doubts and tries so hard not to be. This fast paced story had plenty of suspense, mystery/mysticism and romance. It had a little bit of sleuthing and a lot of addicting drama. It had humor that made me laugh out loud. There's murder...mysterious tarot cards...a real honest to goodness ghost (at the finale)...and lots of lovable, humorous secondary elderly characters. The two main characters are strong and fairly well developed. This story was brilliantly told with dialogue balanced nicely with narration. No loose ends...very few holes...but it never disintegrates or unravels. The excitement held my attention and wouldn't let go.DOWNSIDE: There's a part in the book where Ethan has to carry Diana in his arms. It's at that moment that I realize I don't know how big Diana is...how tall etc. Is she petite, tall or average I don't know about you, but I need a solid character visual in order to connect to the characters. And I need it reiterated once in awhile throughout the story. While personality descriptions are strong, character/physical descriptions dribble in too slowly.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.ExcellentBy Arwen NightstarCAVEAT: While I am not best buds with her, I do chat with the author on Twitter and Facebook and have done an interview with her about this book. I bought the book. It was not given to me.Gleason is an author I like. I loved her vampire series. This is a paranormal suspense but the paranormal is very very light. Tarot cards figure significantly in this book.I did not read the first in this series but didn't feel that I needed to. I was immediately engrossed in the story. The big city lawyer who has to relearn who her mysterious aunt was. Diana came across as believable to me. I liked that she fought her own psychic ability so hard. I also liked that she wasn't going to fall into the hero's, Ethan, lap right away. There is a murder here to be solved with the help of the dead aunt's Tarot cards. I'm a professional Tarot consultant so I was eyeing the card choices pretty hard. Gleason did a great job of choosing which ones to have fall out. The cards falling was a clever thing that worked for me.Who the killer is seems obvious but there's a very clever twist at the end. And another clever twist was having the heroine NOT be crazy for the hero's pet. I liked that she had to overcome that as well. It's a quick easy read that would be a perfect companion for the beach. I will be reading more of Colleen Gleason's work. She's a clever wordsmith who tells a very good tale.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.if you like the tarot...By Logical Reader JudyIn the book an uptight lawyer named Diana travels to the small town of Damariscotta when she inherits everything from her Aunt Belinda whom she hasn't seen in years.Aunt Belinda was a psychic tarot card reader. Diana thinks that she believes her mothers teaching that none of that is real and one must only trust in what is seen on the surface.Things keep getting in the way of her nice, safe beliefs, though. The High Priestess keeps turning up all the time. And sexy neighbor Ethan Tannock won’t go away. The book has a compelling, intense story line filled with danger, romance, tarot cards, 2 very sneaky cats and a neighborhood cast of characters who are characters. For example, there's the group of ladies who quilt. Diana's deceased Aunt Belinda was a beloved member. So is pushy, cranky Helen Galliday, speaking here on Ethan's voicemail:"Ethan Ethan Tannock, is that you...I tell you, I don't like these confounded machines, you know...Are you there...Young man, I don't know where you've been off to for the past few weeks but there's trouble brewin' up here and you need to do something about it!..."Mysteries are solved, murderers are caught and Diana and Ethan head for a very plausible HEA.See all 18 customer reviews...
