The narrator, Grace, is telling her lover NaRa about her passionate and abusive relationship with her ex-boyfriend Ramon. Perhaps more than just telling--Grace is justifying, explaining, hoping to save her current relationship by facing and overcoming her past.Although the novel itself is fragmented, with short scenes appearing out of chronological order, this storytelling frame makes sense--it's as if the intensity and urgency of the memories obliterates any traditional narrative frame.As a reader, I was intrigued by the disintegration of Grace's sex-and-drug-and-violence-filled relationship with Ramon, and the emotional fallout of that breakup is clearly troubling Grace's chances at peace. In one of the novel's most memorable scenes, that fallout literally leaves its mark in an viciously tender moment between Grace and NaRa.This book is partly fueled by an unapologetic and frank sexuality; for that reason, it's definitely not for the squeamish. But for me, I was most affected by the way the book peripherally examines some very uncomfortable issues: tradition and almost-casual cruelty, religion, and the eternal echo of abuse. It's a lot to contain in a short book, but Choi unexpectedly ties things together in a harrowing, lyrical moment near the end.Michael Chabon once wrote, "Every work of art is one half of a secret handshake, a challenge that seeks the password, a heliograph flashed from a tower window, an act of hopeless optimism in the service of bottomless longing." FAITHLESS is a short, fiery message in Morse code that burns itself deep into the reader's mind before extinguishing itself. I can't wait to see what this author is going to do next.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Fragments that almost become whole before decomposingBy Brian McElmurryThis novella regards Grace, and her former lover, an addict and possibly abusive male, and her new lover, a woman with beautiful bone structure. The first person narrative goes from the past to the future and back again. The narrative doesn't give complete context to each situation, but the action gives a clear idea or emotion what is happening. The story is intense and compelling with descriptions that move and inform. The idea of submission and dominance is played with as Grace's male lover is dominant with her and Grace is the dominant in her female relationship; the text taking an almost Dennis Cooper-like element where Grace tries to cut 2 inches into her female lovers hip to see her hip bone, or when she carves her name into her flesh. Later in the text a childhood memory of her father forceably cutting her mother's hair and ranting about her mother not being a virgin when they married is shown. There is an element of ambivalence and anger to the narrator's voice, which is addressed at the poem at the end regarding god and faith. That being faithless and empty are the reality of the narrator though not an easy one, but that this self-destruction has a climax, which is maybe where the narrator feels most alive and transcends the pain and confusion of the world. The novella--form-wise--deconstructs and decomposes, building with non-linear fragments before ending with a poem, more fragmented than the narrative, more a meditation, the story trickling away, like it never was.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Honest and IntenseBy Bob SzantyrA remarkable piece of experimental fiction. The writing is incredible and elicited many visceral reactions from me. I couldn't put it down, and didn't have to - It's a short read with a lot packed in. I've revisited it multiple times.
