It's brilliant and timeless.By Frank L. Greenagel IIThis is part 1 of a 2 part story. Ms. Satrapi's masterpiece is one of my favorite works in all of comics. I read this when it came out and foisted it upon all of my comic reading friends. I gave a copy to a niece several years ago, and then recently bought another copy for another niece for her 11th birthday (I'll hold off on part 2 for her until she is 14). Because I had given it to both nieces, my 76 year old mother decided to read it. She is a retired English teacher, and she was floored at how good the story was and how powerful the medium of comics are in telling a story. Persepolis ended up jumpstarting my mother's interest in comics, and in the following weeks she read all three volumes of March, both volumes of Maus, the Story of My Tits, Chicken with Plums, and Two Brothers (this last one confused her, but she loved everything else).So, there you have it. I'm trying my best to make up for my American public school education by learning more about the history of the rest of the world, and I was hoping that a first hand memoir like Persepolis would be a helpful tool in that task. Now you may be saying, "It's a comic book, if you set your expectations too high you'll only be disappointed." And that may be the case, but the medium certainly hasn't kept works like Maus from telling a deep and insightful human story. Persepolis however, felt all over the place. Particularly the narration. It was hard for me to feel like the story was ever getting much momentum when the focus would jump from one topic or relationship to the next without connecting the dots. And this isn't to say that Satrapi should have been limited to telling some sort of straight narrative like a Spielberg biopic. I would be afraid that kind of linear cogency might have been reductionistic and excluded the many facets of Satrapi's life that were not the headlines of the war. However, if the intention of the roaming narrative was to create a sort of collage effect rather than a straight story, I don't think it worked here. It felt much more copy and paste to me.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.BeautifulBy Kilian85710I never would have read this story if it had been text based, but the delightful pictures Marjane draws makes it irresistible. In Persepoli 2 she continues her engaging story with this account of her life in Austria and eventual return to Iran. She doesn't fit in too well in Austria. She doesn't speak German fluently and never feels at home in her own skin. She is unable to fit in with extended family and is not able to make friends easily. This book tells the tale of her struggles, ending with her return to Iraq. She finds that in spite of her parents' love for her and her love for them for her grandmother, that she doesn't fit in with them either. She has outgrown Iraq. I'm sorry that volumes 3 and 4 are not available in English.
