End of 19th century in Vienna via Sydney, Australia written by an author who studied the papers left behind by his his ancestors and interviewed the survivors.Too much information the author probably found fascinating. Some of it is, some of it is NOT, like quotes from ancient diaries reporting the number of dancing partners of one of the protagonists in Vienna around 1903.The book gets gradually better as it progresses to important historic events like WWII that most of the protagonist survive already in Australia.Being a kind of 'refugee' myself (from communist Czechoslovakia in 1968) I should not have so much difficulty to finish the book. But I had, mostly because the author's emphasis on religion. During my long life (I am 81 now) religion never played ANY role in the life of my parents, siblings and my own life. Apparently, it has been essential part of author's life and complicated tremendously the life of his ancestors.Three stars.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful.A World of YesterdayBy Greg PolanskyI must admit this first, I absolutely love Habsburg history. I have read lots of it and it always interests me. So when I saw this book at the bookstore, I quickly rushed to buy it from the Kindle store. If you love Habsburg history, Fin-de-siècle Vienna/Europe, Art History, or just a beautifully written book, then please do yourself the favor of purchasing it.This book captures the life of three generations of a family, the Gallas, who lived on Wohlenstrasse, the Good Living Street of the title. In focusing on these generations, the author captures the life and times of a certain section of upper class Jewish life, the bildungsbürgertum(educated, cultured bourgeoisie whose ideals the Galla family embody). Primarily the author focuses on the women of the family across the generations. There is Hermine, the autocratic matriarch of the family who cements her position in the world through her patronage of the arts, her daughters Gretl and Kathe, whose sibling rivalry is hard to observe, and her grandaughter, Annelore, whose identity is shaped by her poor treatment from her grandmother and her traumatic departure from Austria. Because this is the author's family that he is writing about, there is a certain amount of emotional connectedness in the writing.Because this family was rich and was cultured, the story focuses on how this family used its wealth to support the arts and their own position in the world. This family gained its wealth and moved to Vienna during the nineteenth century. It then used its wealth from the Fin-de-Siecle period where we meet a host of Secession artists and architects(Gustav Klimt plays a huge part in the early part of the book) to the Anschluss, when the family had to flee Austria because of their Jewish origins, but managed to escape with a trove of their belongings that then become important later on in the books. But the story does not stop there. It then focuses on the lives of Gretl, Kathe, and Annelore in Australia, where they fled. Showing how each of the three women adapted to life in Australia, especially how they either kept or discarded their Jewish identities in favor of a Christian identity),this part of the book was an interesting departure from other books that usually end with the departure of Jews from German speaking Europe. It also was interesting to me on a personal level since my own parents defected from a later tyranny (USSR) and they too ended up in Australia. My title to this review is a reference to Stefen Zweig's The World of Yesterday. There was much sadness and melancholy in that book. Similarly, there is sadness in this book too. This is a book about worlds destroyed and lost and only seen through glimpses of the past. But oh how beautiful that past was.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Austrian modernism, patronage and emigrationBy LilacAustralian writer Tim Bonyhady has written of his mother's Austrian family, The Gallias, and what a story it is. When asked, during a talk this spring in Vienna, what his greatest surprise was on researching for the book, Bonyhady amusedly answered: that my grandfather was such a tycoon.Yes, Jews had done very well in Vienna since the mid 18 hundreds and many became wealthy; in fact they provided large parts of the money and talent to rebuild the city and its palaces along the Ring-Boulevard. At around 10% of the population they represented more than 50% of its medical doctors and considerably higher percentages of lawyers and financiers. They were one of the most astounding success stories anywhere and so became largely responsible for Viennese culture both in the creation and consumption. The book supplies some answers how this all happened. The book begins with a move of the author's great grandparents from the provinces to Vienna and their achieving wealth in the gas lighting business in which Vienna was leading. They now participate in the glory that is Vienna 1900 to the fullest as art patrons amongst others. They subsequently have to emigrate from Austria in 1938 to Australia. The Gallia great-grandparents, Moriz and Hermine, married in the 1890's and had four children. The Gallia's older daughter, Gretl, was a young woman who enjoyed being out in Viennese society in the pre-WW1 years. She became engaged to an architect but the engagement was dissolved. After the war, she married briefly and had a daughter. Her sister became the first woman to earn a doctorate in chemistry. Gretl's daughter Annelore is the author's mother. The main part deals with the art patronage of the founder family. Klimt paints a famous portrait of Hermine that is today in a London museum. A fine analysis is given of the circumstances of the art's creation. Furniture was made by Josef Hoffmann, one of the major craftsmen of the time in the Wiener Werkstaette. The family is able to take along, on emigration, the largest art collection from the period. The story does not end with emigration but depicts the coming to terms in the new environment and a final visit back to Vienna of the author's mother at the turn of another century. The writing is very good, eliciting vivid pictures of a time long gone with its glory and upheaval. Together with several other new books on Vienna 1900 eg. the learned Eric KandelThe Age of Insight: The Quest to Understand the Unconscious in Art, Mind, and Brain, from Vienna 1900 to the Present or on a more literary level The World of Yesterday. Bonyhady should prepare you well for this year's 150th birthday of Klimt amongst others.See all 21 customer reviews... Health Yahoo Beauty Men Have a Harder Time With Aging Than We Thought.
