It's probably not the best way to pick books, but it is one of the ways I do. Just so you know, I have read books with kind of boring book covers too, but I am more likely to pick up a book if it has a nice cover. With all of that being said, I really liked this cover because it seemed so inviting.Let's get to the review.Besides the cover, the blurb about this book was very intriguing. We all have that one friend that does a letter every year to update us on their goings on, and I for one enjoy them. I've even written one or two of them over the years. So, when I read that Angela Gillespie wrote everything that was on her mind instead of the regular sugar-coated news, my curiosity got the best of me.The story is a quick and enjoyable read. It goes in several different directions, which kept me on the fence about several characters. By the end, I had laughed out loud, cringed, and sympathized with each character. I will say that there was a bit of repetitiveness in one area, but by the end of the book I understood why. It did play a part in everything, but it did seem to drag on. All in all, I was very pleased.This is the first book I've read by Monica McInerney, and I must say that I do plan on reading more of her work. OttoWow! What a ride!! The beginning could be any family anywhere who likes to send a yearly Christmas newsletter – full of happy adventures and accomplishments (and maybe embellished a bit…). But Angela, the main character, doesn’t feel so good about life right now…so she vents by sitting at the computer and pouring all her woes into a letter she has no intention of sending to all those recipients.There is only one computer that the family shares in this outback area of Australia. Nick, Angela’s husband, decides to help his wife.And so the roller coaster ride begins. We learn about Angela and Nick, their four children – Genevieve and Victoria (twins in their 30’s), Lindy (20’s), and Ig (10). There are other supporting actors who make this crazy soap-opera-of-a-novel so interesting.None of them are particularly likeable…and yet I found myself rooting for all of them.On some level, this could have been written about any of our families. At least one person has similarities to a sister, brother, aunt, mom, dad, etc.All along the way there are twists in the plot – mostly not good; and as a mother and wife, I really wanted everyone in Angela’s family to have a happy life.I won’t spoil the fun by giving away more of the storyline, so if you want to take a crazy ride, find a comfortable chair, a beach blanket, or extra bed pillows and read “Hello from the Gillespies”!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Good Author Disappoints This Time AroundBy Bethany WilliamsAlthough I have genuinely enjoyed several of Monica McInerney's books, this is not one of her best. Her best books include quirky characters and fast paced, character-driven stories. Although this story has a potentially fun premises (what would happen if you sent a truthful Christmas letter instead of one that put a happy face on the year) it doesn't really follow through. There are numerous side plots, including all the nonsense with her husband's obsession with and subsequent trip to Ireland and none of them get a full treatment - which may be a blessing. Finally, the main character's amnesia is a terrible idea. Any story that has to rely on well-timed amnesia to move the plot ahead simply isn't going well. Unfortunately, Ms. McInerney takes over 600 pages to come to the conclusion that her main character needs to relax more often. Not a stunning conclusion, but not unexpected given the lackluster mien throughout. Try again Ms. McInerney!See all 293 customer reviews...
