I continue to be amazed by her intellect, insights, humanity and humor. As a Southerner, I was shocked to have to come to terms that even I (who consistently objects to the way that Southerners are portrayed in movies, TV and "news" stories) have evidently become victim to those stereotyped portrayals! Why else would I be so shocked at this woman's depth It's not a "page burner" but it is a VERY enlightening book. While the book doesn't defend slavery at its roots, it does bring a different view of it including the loyalty that better treated slaves brought to the Confederacy. It's possible that her views of the horrible institution were tainted by her own denial of horrible realities, but it seems genuine as she is amazed that slaves would risk their lives to protect their "masters" on the battlefield, etc. when they could so easily have traveled a matter of "feet" to "freedom" ... However, more than the story it tells, I enjoyed getting a glimpse of the intelligence of this woman from another era.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Some of the best parts are the littleBy KCWI've read a lot from the Northern perspective but this is the first from the Southern. If you have an imagination, it's not hard to picture yourself in her world because her descriptions are so vivid. Some of the best parts are the little, gossipy tidbits (someone was asked to play "Yankee Doodle" without the "Yankee") but it's very suspenseful too as loses her fortune and moves from one city to the next, relying on the kindness of friends and strangers. She's very likable although completely oblivious to her own racism. She and her "servant" stop at a rest stop where she paid for two chairs. She sat on one and put her feet up on the other while her servant sat on the floor. She writes this as if there's nothing wrong with it. But that's part of what makes the book so important and unique. It's a birds-eye view into the mind of a Southerner at the time. They're so convinced that they're in the right but almost certain from the beginning that they can't win the war. American history is best told from the mouths of the people who lived it and this diary is very enlightening. I came away amazed that the country could have come together at all after the Civil War with all its destruction and resentment.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Great Hard Copy, Terrible Kindle VersionBy Stoneboro 1949I had the hard copy version of this book and it is a great read. It gives one a good insight into the mindset of teh privileged areistocracy of the antebellum South. I didn't have a lot of sympathy with Mary as she was complaining about not having enough variety of top end food stuffs or luxury goods to hold a propper dinner party, while many Confederate soldiers were starving, dressed in rags and often were shoeless. Her views of the Northern people and especially Lincoln were very negative (they are so common, work in trades, and are interested in making money), At the end of the book, you start to devlop some sympathy for this woman who lived in a fantasy world who then had her world come crashing down around her leading to a sudden dose of reality. However, her and her family still came out much better than the common Southern farming class and soldiers. The problem with the Kindle version is terrible formating. Footnotes will appear randomly in the page text (top, middle and end) and may be spread out over a couple of pages in different page locations. The footnotes can also appear several pages from their iniitial reference point. Thus you are turning back and forth between pages trying to figure out whas is diary text and footnotes. There are also "Chapter Headings" that appear at some place in the section they refer to, but never at the begining. These bold formated headings can also appear in the middle of a sentence which is very confusing. Finally, there are the scan errors which generate strange symbols or incorrect letters and or spelling mistakes that turn some words into a guessing game. The hard copy is well worth the investment but the Kindle version I purchased needs some major cleaning up and formating. I was very dissapointed in the quality of the Kindle version. In this case, sorry , but go old school people and buy the hard copy.See all 81 customer reviews...
