What a beautifully frustrating and revealing book. And impossibly well crafted. I want to slap all of the principals, and then hug them, and then get everyone a therapist. I can't possibly have anything new to add to Criticism of Thomas Hardy--threats of bodily harm do not in my view qualify--but his ability to pick out the things we experience as tragic, or joyful, or melancholy, or triumphant and then describe those things poignantly is perhaps unsurpassed. It seems he alone has access to some previously-unknown API that precisely resonates on every page. (Dare I recommend Tess to fans of Neal Stephenson)I laughed, I cried...okay, fine, maybe I didn't laugh. But I was transported.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. One Painful Read!By Darlene H.I read the Mayor of Casterbridge and loved it! If I had read Tess of the D'Urbervilles first, I would have stopped right there. I can't believed I finished the book because it was like pulling teeth to get through this book. I guess I finished the book out of pure curiosity to see how it would end. But after I finished, I felt completely flat. There were many times I was absolutely lost at what Mr. Hardy even wrote. I literally just got the jest of what he was saying, but felt completely unclear at the way he described what was happening. There were other times, his writing was very clear. Basically, the story could have been told in half the pages it was given. It was a story of a girl who lived in poor circumstances, went to work for a distant relative, had a baby out of wedlock who died within a very short time. Because of this dark secret from her past, she ends up working on a dairy farm as a milkmaid and falls in love with a preacher's son. Once the love of her life learns about her past, the last half of the book deals with how she deals with the consequences of her past. It was a very depressing story. I wish I had never read the book!11 of 11 people found the following review helpful.Ahh, the long suffering TessBy MizEm, Queens, NYA tale of innocence, injustice, seduction and morality, all heaped on the shoulders of a young farm worker. Tess never catches a break, and only once gets angry and frustrated enough to take despairing action. I will always remember her standing in those bleak winter flat lands harvesting frozen turnips. She tried so hard to prevail against the economic, moral and misogynist times that eventually overwhelm her. I read this as a teenager, and now again with a fuller understanding. Tess is a symbol for all the unfairness and misplaced moral judgments on women over the past 200 years. Unfortunately, there are still many women in Tess's predicament, which keeps this theme and book current.See all 761 customer reviews... Tess (1979) - IMDb Synopsis cast and crew and user comments.
